A new restaurant: El Limonar, Velez Malaga

I recently visited El Limonar Restaurante in Velez Malaga, a brand new restaurant that deserves to succeed. The restaurant has superb decor, service and menu served by staff who take a pride in making your meal a truly memorable experience.  The head waiter speaks excellent English as well as Spanish, and without hesitation switches from one to the other, so there should not be a problem with ordering your dishes.  The menu is extensive, and provides a wide choice for the most demanding of palates.

I asked about facilities for the disabled client requiring easy access.  It was with pride that the proprietor showed me how they had most sympathetically provided for the physically challenged and I was really impressed with the thoughtfulness that had been employed in the whole design of the restaurant.  Perhaps someone who has needed to use these facilities could contact me and confirm or criticise how they were received and provided for?

For those with a GPS the restaurant is located at:-  36°46’11.09″N  4° 5’47.73″W

New kitchen gadget that you could do without?

This is a kitchen gadget for the home cook who just can’t handle any left over spaghetti. The device measures pasta for spaghetti_measure_gagdetone to four servings. It comes with four colors of the centre measuring rings.

There’s much to love in this handy little tool from the UK’s critically acclaimed Joseph Joseph. The spaghetti measurer retails for $8.50. I like it for its jazzy appeal and practical usefulness, but I would probably never really use it that often.  Just another gadget to fill up my gadget drawer.

Do you like eating salmon if it is on the menu? Why it might cost more.

salmonBecause of the popularity of salmon amongst diners, it has become a popular fish to farm in fish farms. Leaving aside the green issues and all of the many arguments that prevail regarding fish farming, the one danger is that an infection can occur in the stock that might not normally appear in the wild.  This is because of  the close proximity of the fish stock.  When this happens the whole stock is likely to be wiped out.  Such a disaster has happened off the coast of Chile.

An outbreak of Infectious Salmon Anemia,  or ISA virus, has swept southern Chile´s Chiloe Island, forcing early harvests and emptying once-teeming fish cages. That´s driving up global prices at US grocers and restaurants turn to alternative salmon suppliers in North America and Europe.

When the demand rises for European salmon as US markets divert their attention to new suppliers the price of salmon is likely to rise.

The good news is that other fish types are in abundance and possibly more readily available.  So if your favourite salmon is not available or unreasonable expensive, why not be a little adventurous and try a different fish and a different dish?

Mediterranean Europe in particular, has always been much more creative in the dishes that the restaurants offer and any restaurant specialising in fish dishes will be able to offer tempting alternatives.
