“We stayed at Cantueso in June this year. It is a beautiful and peaceful place which has the added benefit of a brilliant restaurant just steps from the cottages.”

Stumbled on your site and found it interesting, but cannot decide if this is about Spanish places or worldwide?
However it just so happens that my wife and I spent the last three weeks in Periana and would like to comment on the eds review of Cantueso. Not sure when he was there to suggest it is pricy and after all the word “gourmet” in the title infers we are talking about more than steam rollered rabbit.
We tried Cantueso’s 5 course tasting menu at 19€ on our first visit and because we were so impressed we moved on the next time to the 7 course for 24€.
They were exceptional value. If you are a true food lover you will realise that cheap doesn’t always go with quality.
We didn’t try their 7€ Crisis menu but saw it being served and it looked fine.
Of course most people will not want a taster menu and we would recommend the goats cheese salad which is available on the a la carte menu.
Only criticism we had was the access road which due to recent storms was like the somme!
During our stay we also went to several other restaurants in the area but apart from Calabaza (seriously pricy)in Nerja could not find anything close to Cantueso.
Readers judge for yourself the price range on the restaurants own website which has menus and prices.
Sorry A PS
The map on the review is certainly not where we went!
Hi Fred,
Thank you for your comments. You are right about not judging an eating experience by price alone and I for one, try to only judge by cuisine, service and ambiance.
I will of course, adjust the map reference but it was given to me by another reviewer.
Thanks again and if you feel you have other comments, please feel free to add them. By the way, have you tried La Viuda in Mezquetilla? Absolutely fabulous food, service and setting but you need to go on a Friday Saturday or Sunday.
Thanks for pointing out about the map, now pointing at the restaurant’s two maps and helpful directions.
Calabaza is not “seriously” pricey, indeed their lunchtime menu (3 courses) is 19 euros a head, and their food is excellent. That is good value for truly excellent food (certainly the best intrnational cuisine that I have found in Nerja.) Their new Sushi bar is due to open in May 2010.
Cantueso is of course delightful too and has the best vista of any restaurant in the area.
Correction: Calabaza’s lunchtime menu is 16 euros, so a bit cheaper in fact.
