An Evening With Friends At Restaurant Olvido, Nerja

YouTube Preview ImageOut of the blue I received an invitation from Steve, our host, to join him for a dinner party at the restaurant Olvido,  Nerja.  In my innocence, I thought it might be for four of us but the party was for ten and I had the opportunity to meet some nice new friends who already appeared to be in a party mood.

Having been greeted at the door and asked if we had booked a table (very politely), and assured the owner that we were not gatecrashers but indeed, we were part of a larger party, our coats were taken and we were shown to our table.

The usual introductions were made and  I tried very hard to remember all of the names but I think I only managed about two thirds of them and had to ask for names to be repeated.  I put it down to age and this excuse seemed to work.  One of the few benefits of being gray haired I think.

A  waiter came and took our order for drinks.  A difficult job because we were all busy chatting away, and with the cacophony of chatter from the other tables and our indifferent Spanish vocabularies, (with the exception of Steve, our host, and Aiveen, who has kissed both the ´Blarney Stone´of Ireland and the Spanish equivalent, who can both chat to any one in any language), we gave our orders and hoped that we had picked the right ones.

The head waiter followed and we all listened carefully to what others on the table were ordering to see if we could pick up tips as to what we should select.  The choices available to us were legion in number and as a consequence I became confused and asked the charming young lady to my left to help me.  She told me that the lamb cooked in French style was delicious so I ordered it.  I should have been a little more cautious because the sheer quantity was a little overpowering.  Delicious it was, but there is a limit to the amount you can eat in one sitting and I had to ask if the remainder could be put into a doggy bag.  (My  dog was very pleased that I had limits to my apatite because he manged to enjoy the rest of the meal for the next four days!

Delicious food with a great variety of choices, fabulous ambiance, excellent service and a table of wonderful company; the whole evening left us with a feeling that we had made new friends and I had found a restaurant that I would want to revisit.  It was just joyful!

El Salmon restaurant, Torre del Mar

One of the most reputable gourmet restaurants in the Axarquia area is located in Torre del Mar. I’ve dined at the El Salmon restaurant before, but this was the first time I had sampled their lunch time Menu del Dia. Prior to the first course we ordered a large mixed salad to whet our appetites. The customary fresh warm bread rolls with butter portions also arrived. The first course consisted of either a vegetable cream soup, tomatoes filled with seafood or a crepe filled with mushrooms in a creamy sauce. All starters were faultless in flavour. The second course was a choice of white filleted fish in a creamy sauce or marinated pork ribs; both dishes came with fresh vegetables and chips. The food was well presented and more than ample (I had to ask for a doggie bag for the leftovers). I personally found the ribs to be over-salted, but this is perhaps only because I rarely use salt in my home cooking. The dessert was a choice of vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce, flan or kiwi fruit. The entire meal was excellent value for money at a cost of 8.95 Euros. The service was excellent, as usual. One of our party was an invalid with a walking frame, but the restaurant catered for this with their toilet facilities being on the ground floor with no stairs or other obstructions. El Salmon also caters for special occasions and large parties – book in advance, as this is always a busy restaurant.

A new restaurant: El Limonar, Velez Malaga

I recently visited El Limonar Restaurante in Velez Malaga, a brand new restaurant that deserves to succeed. The restaurant has superb decor, service and menu served by staff who take a pride in making your meal a truly memorable experience.  The head waiter speaks excellent English as well as Spanish, and without hesitation switches from one to the other, so there should not be a problem with ordering your dishes.  The menu is extensive, and provides a wide choice for the most demanding of palates.

I asked about facilities for the disabled client requiring easy access.  It was with pride that the proprietor showed me how they had most sympathetically provided for the physically challenged and I was really impressed with the thoughtfulness that had been employed in the whole design of the restaurant.  Perhaps someone who has needed to use these facilities could contact me and confirm or criticise how they were received and provided for?

Restaurant Saute, Velez Malaga

This is a new restaurant that you should definitely put on your wish list of places worth visiting.  Excellent menu with an alternative menu for children.

Brilliant but unobtrusive service in a relaxing, beautifully decorated dining area. The wine list has been well chosen and the coffee is really good. Excellent facilities for the disabled diner in a wheel chair and the entrance to the restaurant has large sliding doors which eases entrance immensly.

An ideal destination for a family meal out or a celebration party.

You can find the restaurant at Calle Aceituneros, Señorio de Velez,

A Night Out at Chinese Restaurant Asiatico Jing

This review was produced by my good friend, Elaine Newport-Black.

Our visit to this delightful restaurant was a really memorable one for us, reason being it was to celebrate the birthday of our special friend.

We were greeted by friendly smiling staff that immediately seated us and made us feel most welcome.  Our party consisted of 18 people. The staff were very efficient and promptly took our orders.  Our table was served without delay and the delicious food  placed on the table piping hot, considering the amount they had to cater for; this was a feat in itself.

The restaurant is tastefully decorated and extremely clean; it is situated on Torrex sea front. In the day time it would be a lovely place to eat and then enjoy the Mediterranean sea or in the evening after eating, go for a stroll and take in the sea air. We have no hesitation in recommending anyone that enjoys Chinese food of a high standard to go along and sample their wonderful fare and warm hospitality.
